Christine was off to South Wales for another swimming
gala, so Rowan and I tagged along but took the train into the city from Ystrad
Rhondda, adjacent to the pool. 143 614 was heading for the
end of the line at Treherbert, we were going the other way.

Wales were playing Australia in a rugby international but there were to be
no 37 hauled services to Rhymney, the Marches specials were 67s and nothing
of interest had been announced on the gen lists so we alighted at Queen Street
and made for Cardiff Castle. We'd been wanting to visit for ages, so this
was the ideal opportunity. Photography is prohibited but our guide allowed
us to photograph the roof garden. Cardiff
Castle is amazing, if you're in the city, don't miss it!
After lunch, we returned to Central station for an hour or so of observation before the 143 back.

A surprise greeted us... there had been no word about the Fifties being out.
50 049 Defiance was sitting at a platform having
unloaded the rugby fans.

Off they went.

The HSTs came and went, in front of the Millennium Stadium and the water tower.
