The Cotton Spinner

21st April 2003

47 734 brought us from Bangor to murky Crewe where 47 635, coupled to the EWS observation saloon, was on route-learning duties between Crewe and Stoke.

While we waited on platform 6 for the Cardiff to Manchester Alphaline, a pair of Fragonset 31s brought a train of West Coast empty stock through platform 1.

We toured the Lee Miller exhibition at the Whitworth gallery before walking to Manchester Victoria to meet Charlie and Joanna Hulme and Joanna's father for a ride round the Oldham loop behind Stanier Black Five number 45157 The Glasgow Highlander.

The Oldham Loop was intended to become part of the Metrolink tram network - this was the first time we'd rode along it but the plan was shelved so perhaps it won't be the last. 45147 is detached after returning to Victoria.

45147 joins the other loco used on these trips, BR Standard Class 4 number 76079
