Wales and Borders extended their summer Saturday Cardiff to Fishguard service
to start from Hereford so it could pick up rugby fans for the international
match at the Millennium Stadium. Rowan and I got up early for the 06:03 Alphaline
service to Cardiff, alighting at Hereford to switch to a real train. 37
405 was waiting for us at the head of a rake of Mk 2 coaches still
in Virgin livery. The arrival of the execrable Voyagers meant that Virgin
no longer needed them so they had been returned to the leasing company.

We'd heard that 405 was to be replaced at Cardiff as its fire bells were playing
up, so we jumped off to photograph proceedings.

37 886 Sir Dyfed/County of Dyfed was the replacement.
We were in luck - a freight locomotive and we wouldn't miss the absence of
train heating equipment on this warm summer's day!
