Locomotive Odyssey

Wednesday 21st July 2004: Bangor to Cardiff

Rowan and I caught 1A49, the 09:49 Virgin departure from Bangor, alighting at Crewe where 47 810 Porterbrook made way for electric traction. 47 840 North Star in BR blue is stabled, having earlier worked 1A23 (05:27 Holyhead - Crewe). Later it would be in charge of 1D89 (21:33 Crewe - Holyhead) but by then we'd be in Cardiff.

In contrast to 840's traditional name, 810 is lumbered with the name of the leasing company but the locomotive is in fine fettle.

Let's take a closer look at 840
