Crewe - Holyhead Brush Farewell

30 March 2004

30 March was a sad day on the North Wales Coast with Arriva Trains Wales running their last 47-hauled train. This was virgin-livered 47750 (formerly Atlas) which was on-hire for CrossCountry services at one-time with a rake of 4 ex-virgin mk-2s. I rode on the 1K67 from Bangor to Crewe and returning on 1D75 to Holyhead and 1G79 to Bangor.

14:54 - 47750 is seen at Crewe with the 1K67 12:45 from Holyhead

15:08 - Running round at Crewe for the last time, before working the 1D75 15:27 to Holyhead

17:28 - ... and running round at Holyhead still with headboard

17:32 - Awaiting departure of the final 1G79 18:22 to Birmingham New Street

18:49 - I crossed over the footbridge to watch this departing for the final time. In fact was diagrammed to return to Holyhead overnight and empty to Bangor in order to form the 06:38 to Manchester Piccadilly the next day.

Virgin returned 47s on the Crewe - Holyhead section on services from/to London Euston in the summer timetable from 23 May - 25 September before Voyagers took over. It is not the last one because of endless problems with 175's forced Arriva to use 47s again for Riviera Trains on one diagram!
