47s on the coast and ... oh yes sun!

24 September 2002

I decided to do some 47 bashing on the North Wales Coast before they go. It was the last week of the summer timetable and for Class 47s (not). To ride behind a Class 47 on the full length of the North Wales Coast to Crewe means a early start at 07:07 or a late night either of them I didn't fancy, but I could ride behind the 1A46 Virgin to Chester from Bangor at 09:51.

47853/D1733 departs Chester on the 1A49 09:19 Holyhead - London Euston which I rode from Bangor. The 47 is removed at Crewe and be replaced by a Class 86, 87 or 90 electric locomotive on the back to push this to London, this now the only day-train with engine charge in Britain. Unfortunately I can't go to Crewe to see it, as I had to get off here to ride behind the 47 to Holyhead.

47818 Strathclyde arrives at Chester 20 minutes late after a loco change at Crewe with the 1D87 08:44 London Euston - Holyhead in place of an HST. I rode this train to Holyhead.

47818 Strathclyde runs-round at Holyhead, an sight will finish soon.

... and awaits departure of the 1A77 13:43 to London Euston

47733 Eastern Star runs-rounds at Holyhead after working the 1D67 10:07 from Birmingham New Street.

... and awaits departure of the 1G11 14:02 back to Birmingham New Street which I rode to Colwyn Bay

47733 Eastern Star departs Colwyn Bay.
